What is Fasting?

Fasting is primarily the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. Since there may be those who because of health or age are not able to fast from foods or liquids, these individuals may choose to abstain from other desires, such as television, video games, etc. Biblical fasting always centers on spiritual purposes.

Why Fasting?

The primary reason for fasting is to draw closer to God through our sacrifice and seeking him through prayer. Jesus said, when you fast; not if you fast. (Matthew 6:16-18) Fasting allows us to experience a deeper relationship with God.

How to Begin?

Remember to seek God first through prayer before starting your fast. Ask for guidance in choosing your form of fasting. As you continue through the fasting period, remember to seek God daily in prayer and in studying his word. Start with a clear goal. Be specific and clarify your motives. Why are you fasting? As a church, we are fasting and praying for a Revival, in the church and in our personal lives.

Preparing Spiritually

Before you begin confess your sins to God. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas of weaknesses in your life. Forgive all who have offended you and ask forgiveness from those you may have offended. God is a faithful God.

Deciding Your Fast

Seek God first. The type of fast you choose is a personal choice between you and God.

  • You may do a full fast where you give up food and water. (NOTE: This is not recommended for someone that has not had a regular fasting routine and not more then 1-3 days).
  • A normal fast where there is no food, just water.
  • A partial fast where you are giving up certain foods all together or on certain days or time.
  • You may also consider an all liquid fast.

Although the word “fast” is used as abstaining from food in the Bible and does not refer to giving up other things, during a fast one can abstain from other pleasures as well, such as entertainment, television, video games, and hobbies.

Remember what pleases God is the attitude of your heart sincerely seeking Him. (Isaiah 58)
